Fresh Outdoors Project

The state of California has awarded DMC Foundation a $300,000 Grant for the Fresh Outdoors Project.

Fresh Outdoors Project (FOP) is a state-funded program designed to decrease tobacco exposure were people live, work and play. Its mission is "to reduce exposure to second-hand smoke, discourage tobacco industry sponsorship, and improve air quality in and around Stanislaus community centers, sports functions, and apartment complexes."

Fresh Outdoor Project

Fresh Outdoors Project has been successful in meeting several program objectives. We have proposed and helped to implement several tobacco-free policies in Stanislaus County. In 2000, these policies were implemented: Tobacco-free playgrounds in the City of Modesto (prior to the State-wide law), Tobacco-free Skate parks in Modesto, Ceres and Riverbank, and Smoke-free areas at the Stanislaus County Fair. Twenty-five foot Smoke-free entrances were implemented at Modesto Junior College and California State University of Stanislaus.

The California Department of Health Services - Tobacco Control Section awarded DMC Foundation with an initial grant in 1999 for the implementation of the Fresh Outdoors Project, and additionally awarded an augmentation grant for an additional two years. In July 2005, the Fresh Outdoors Project was awarded a new grant for a three-year term. Work included creating smoke free areas in public places such as John Thurman Field and the Gallo Center for the Arts. The 2005-2008 grant of $450,000 is extended to 2010, with the award of an additional $300,000. The scope of work includes reducing the exposure of children to second-hand smoke in apartment complexes, and the additional funding will be used to reduce the use of tobacco products in and around medical facilities and recreational places where children gather.
